Congressional Democrats Seek to Expand Nursing Home Inspections Amid COVID-19
May 6th, 2020
Among the groups at high risk for developing a severe COVID-19 infection, none may be as vulnerable, or in a setting so ripe for quick spread than the nursing home population. As you see in our last blog post, industry lobbyists are pushing states to grant immunity to facilities during the pandemic. Congressional Democrats are, on the other hand, seeking to expand inspections at nursing homes, bolster reporting of deaths, and fund more protective equipment. According to a Bloomberg Government briefing, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said he expects to see legislation on this "sooner than later". It remains to be seen whether this will come in time to stem the current tide of nursing home hotspots.
